Thunder Valley Casino & Resort

My husband and I went to Thunder Valley Casino & Resort last Thursday for a one night Getaway.  It is in Lincoln, Ca only a 1.5 hour drive from us, so it is a great one night place to go.  This is the nicest Indian casino I have ever been too.  I love the decor, it is all earth tones, no sickening purple & pink carpets & wall papers.  I think what I like the most, being a non-smoker, is this casino dosen’t smell like smoke.  They must have an incredible ventilation system.

The rooms are the nicest casino rooms I have ever seen and I have been to casinos in NJ, Vegas, Reno, Tahoe and California.  The beds are super comfy, the bathroom is awesome!  It has a big soaking tub and a separate marble shower.  They have Keurig coffee makers   in the room! So bring your own k-cups if you like more than 1 cup in the morning.  They supply 2ea of coffee, decaf and teas.  Speaking of coffee, we found a self serve free coffee station in the casino!  No more waiting 30 mins in the line at the one coffee shop in the casino.

We ate breakfast and lunch in the Thunder Cafe it was also very good!  They served one of the best hamburgers I have ever had.  Seriously!  For breakfast we both had NY steak & eggs.  The steaks and eggs were cooked perfectly!

I treated myself to the Popular Spa Package.  100 mins of pure bliss!  It included a body polish with a salt scrub, a 50 min massage, I chose deep tissue, this also included hot stone therapy after that, I got a pedicure!  The spa facilities are beautiful and relaxing I could have spent all day in there.  I will certainly be back for more spa treatments.

If you are in the Sacramento area, looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend the Thunder Valley Casino & Resort.  If you don’t like to gamble there is shopping galore just a mile or 2 away in Roseville.

US Travel

Wow, I just read about the robberies of 22 cruise-line passengers who were on a tour in Puerto Vallarta! I had no idea the crime had become so bad in Mexico.

Several years ago my husband and I went to Cancun and had a fabulous time. We loved it there and plan on going back someday, but we don’t have passports yet. I decided we should explore travel in the US. (what a concept! lol) There

Florida Keys

Florida Keys

are lots of beautiful inexpensive places to visit in the US. For instance Florida, where we just got back from. I thought Florida was better than Cancun. The water was warmer, cleaner, less crowded and there was a beach. In Cancun the beach is being washed away so it is rocky and non-existent in some places. While we were there the rip tides were so bad we could not safely swim.

Our trip to Florida was cheaper than our trip to Cancun. BUT, since we don’t eat carbs, we don’t eat much. We save a lot of money because we are not constantly eating. We also saved money because we were off the beaten path. If we had stayed in Miami the trip cost would have doubled.

If you are looking for US travel that is warm during winter months, I suggest: Southern Florida, Florida Keys, US Virgin Islands, San Diego Ca, and Hawaii.

Port Salerno, Florida

I am currently flying back from a log weekend getaway in Stuart Florida and loving the Amarican Airlines gogo inflight internet!   This is the first time my husband and I have been to Florida and it certainly won’t be the last.   We

Pirates Cove Inn

Sunrise from our room.

stayed at the Pirates Cove Inn located in what the locals call the “Manatee Pocket” area.  It is located in a harbor surrounded by yachts, waterfront restaurants and tiki bars.  This was a great location because it was beautiful, relaxing and we could walk to several nice restaurants and bars and not have to mess around with driving and parking.  There was even a breakfast /lunch place (Whistle Stop) within walking distance and it was so good we ate there every day.

If you enjoy fishing, this is the place to be!  Every morning we watched the fishing boats go out and every evening we would see what they brought in.  You can easily charter a boat from the bait shop located next to the tiki bar.

I always like to eat the local food when I travel.  If in Mexico, I eat Mexican food, here in Stuart Fl, I ate seafood. We ate at the Pirates Loft twice.

I have to say it was the freshest and the best seafood I have ever had.  The crab and scallop dishes were amazing.  I have never had such a tender buttery scallop in California (where I live).  And the crab cakes were made of all crab, not bread balls with a touch of crab, like we get in California.

I highly recommend staying at the Pirates Cove Inn if you are looking for a low key, fun and relaxing getaway.

Ashland Oregon

Beasy's on the Creek

Beasy's on the Creek

A few weeks ago my husband and I went up to Medford for truck parts and decided to stay in Ashland for the night. What a cute little town it is! We stayed at the Ashland Creek Inn. The Ashland Creek Inn was beautiful. It is located right on a creek with balconies off of each room that looks over the creek. It is also located within walking distance of the downtown area where there is lots of tax free shopping and dining. We spent the day walking around town shopping and occasionally stopping in a pub for beer & glass of wine.

After shopping we walked back to our room looking for a place to eat dinner.  We decided on Beasy’s on the Creek.  It was conveniently located across from The Ashland Creek Inn.  I was shocked to see that this restaurant is listed as #34 on Tripadvisor.  This restaurant was fabulous!  It has a great romantic setting on the creek, wonderful food and perfect service.

My only complaint about about our trip, besides it being too short, was the Inn didn’t serve the included breakfast until 9am.  We had to skip breakfast because that is just too late for us.The Wild Goose Cafe

That turned out to be a good thing because we stopped just down the freeway at the Wild Goose Cafe & Bar.   This is your typical diner looking place, nothing fancy, but the breakfast was awesome!  We are big meat eaters and when I saw the “carnivore omelet” on the menu I knew this was my kinda place.   Again, I am shocked this place is rated #35 on Tripadvisor!  We both agreed this was one of the best breakfasts we have ever had!  Makes me wonder about those reviews.

Noble Coffee

The coffee was the best coffee I have ever had in a restaurant.  They told me it was Noble Coffee, made right in Ashland!  I was almost tempted to go back downtown to buy some, but noticed I could buy it online.  As soon as I got home I ordered a sample pack.  So far we have tried the Daydream blend.  It is ridiculously good!

We had such a nice time there we planning on making Ashland one of our regular little “get away” destinations.

A Wonderful Chardonnay!

I just received my spring wine club shipment from Husch Vineyards. I am not a huge Chardonnay fan, but I do love buttery or creamy Chardonnays.  To me they are just as wonderful as a nice Cabernet, a sensual wine to be sipped and thoroughly enjoyed.  Finding a good “buttery” Chardonnay these days is not easy.  But, the new 2006 Special Reserve Chardonnay from Husch Vineyards is spectacular!  It is one of the best, if not THE best buttery Chardonnay I have ever tasted.

I think a seafood pasta dish, like a Fettuccine Alfredo made with Gruyere cheese, shrimp, crab, lobster or all of the above, would be “Heavenly” with this Chardonnay.  Or simply some Camembert cheese (a French brie type cheese), a sourdough baguette and a gourmet nut mix (macadamia, cashew and almond) would be wonderful too.[ad#ad-2]

Anderson Valley Wine Tasting

Husch Vineyards

Wine tasting in Anderson Valley, (north coast Ca) was very nice! No huge crowds like in Napa. Beautiful country, a little out of the way but well worth it. We went in March and stayed in Fort Bragg during the Whale Festival, where they have Beer Tasting, Chowder Tasting and all kinds of fun things to do & see.

Once in Anderson Valley we first stopped at Brutocao Cellars, then on to Navarro Vineyards where a deck overlooks the vineyards, a beautiful setting for lunch or a snack. Standish Wine Company was next, a new company with old history and great wines. Next stop was Husch Vineyards the tasting room is in a cute old building. Husch has a great collection of wines, I liked it so much I joined their wine club! Our last stop was Handley Cellars another beautiful vineyard with great tasting wines. All of the vineyards we stopped at had wonderful wines, I went home well stocked!

Fort Bragg is about 30 mins up the coast and has very reasonable accommodations. We were with a group and stayed at the Seabird Lodge. The Seabird Lodge is a very reasonable, “no frills”, place to stay.

One of my favorite places to stay is the Harbor Lite Lodge. Ask for a room on the river side, those rooms have balcony’s with views of the river & ocean. It is right on the Noyo River and you can walk down to the harbor where there are some really great restaurants.

Warning: Fort Bragg is a down-to-earth old fishing town, if you are looking for upscale, 5 star accommodations, meals and shopping,  go to Mendocino.   I happen to like Fort Bragg over Mendocino, but then again I am pretty down to earth.[ad#ad-2]

The Peppermill Casino & Resort in Reno Nv

It’s been a while since I posted.  I have been so busy.  My husband & I escaped to Reno for Christmas.  I thought it would be weird not being around friends & family for Christmas, but we had a GREAT time!.

The Peppermill Hotel Casino is remodeling but it was not really noticeable to us.  We got there Christmas eve.  I was surprised how busy it was.  Christmas day everybody cleared out of the place, so by dinner time, there was no line to the Christmas buffet.  The food was great for a buffet!  I don’t normally go to buffets, but this one was really good and relaxing.  I usually do all the cooking for Christmas dinner so this was a treat for me!

We stayed in a spa suite.  It was wonderful and well worth the extra $$.  All the spa rooms also have a steam shower big enough for 2!  I love the steam shower…. (update 2/2012 – I think they took out all the steam showers in the renovation)

We had such a great time I am seriously thinking of making this a Christmas tradition for us.  It was relaxing and fun during a very busy time of the year for me.

Wharf Master’s Inn – Point Arena, CA

This place wWharf Masters Innas awesome. My husband and I really enjoyed it. Pt Arena is a tiny town located in Mendocino County just south of Ft. Bragg, Ca. What I liked about the Wharf Masters Inn was that every thing you needed was within walking distance we didn’t have to get in the car to drive anywhere. It is located on the hillside in a cove, I think all the rooms have balcony’s with beautiful views overlooking the cove & ocean. The rooms are nice and cozy, ours had a fireplace and a whirlpool tub.  The inn was built around the historical wharf masters house.  This is not a 5 star ritzy place, it is a rustic romantic ocean side getaway.

Down in the cove is a rocky beach, a fishing pier, a coffee shop, gift shop, pizza joint and a restaurant & bar. The restaurant & bar is nothing fancy, but don’t let that fool you, the service and food was exceptional. I was very impressed and look forward to going back.
